The following morning, I called Susan on my way downtown. I swung by the Cozy Corgi long enough to pick up a dirty chai for me, an Americano for Susan, and a bag of Earl Grey rolls and a couple of breakfast empanadas. Watson had just enough opportunity to fawn over Ben before leaving in time to avoid the breakfast rush for the second day in a row.

As before, Watson’s annoyance at leaving Ben so soon lessened as we parked in front of the police station. However, it wasn’t merely excitement over seeing his favorite detective—judging by the drool, a clear and passionate expectation of more buffalo jerky played a role. Clutching the container of drinks and the pastry bag tight, I kept up with his eager pace and managed the briefest of hellos to dispatch as we hurried through the entrance and down the hall to Susan’s office.

She’d left the door open, and—whether hearing Watson’s clamoring paws or simply due to being that good of a detective—hollered for us to come in before I knocked on the doorframe. Unlike the day before, she swiveled in her chair just as Watson was preparing to leap into her lap, and held out her hand. “Stop right there, Fleabag.”

He did, skidding to a halt and issuing a pitiful whimper.

“Nope.” Susan shook both her hand and her finger at him. “Yesterday was a fluke. A deserved one, but nonetheless, today, we’re getting back to officer training. And officers, fleabags and otherwise, do not hug, embrace, sit in each other’s laps. Or drool.” She scowled as if she tasted something sour. “Looks like I’ve already missed the opportunity on that last one, but so be it. Now…” She stuck her hand in the already opened bag on her desk, the sound of crinkling plastic causing Watson to whimper again. The sound died under Susan’s deadly glare. “Sit.” She held up a piece of jerky.

Watson whimpered once more and looked up at me as I transferred the drinks and the bag from my grip to the desk.

“No.” Susan snapped her fingers. “Don’t look at your mom, she’s not going to save you.” Another snap. “Sit.”

With a mighty sigh, Watson sat.

Susan scrunched up her nose in consideration. “I don’t appreciate the attitude, but… I also kind of respect it. So… here.” She lowered the treat, nearly losing a finger and almost managed to hide the curve of a smile before she pointed under her desk. “Over here. Lay.”

She hadn’t tried either of those commands on Watson before. For a moment, I thought he was confused, but after Watson gave yet another dramatic sigh, he plodded beneath her desk and out of view. As he received another piece of jerky a moment later, I assumed he’d followed orders.

“Now… stay.” She gave him a third piece for good measure, then snagged her own treat from the Cozy Corgi bag, starting with an empanada.
